Fatherhood Initiative

Summary:

Provides a comprehensive array of services, pairing intensive academic preparation with career oriented occupational skills training, which includes, an intensive GED preparatory course to prepare DC Fathers to achieve their educational and vocational goals. The curriculum is a workforce development model, designed to assist fathers to set and reach educational and vocational goals, provide for their children and secure stable living wage employment.

Detailed:

Targeted population includes DC Residents who are: Young fathers, at-risk youth, custodial and non-custodial fathers, low-income and underemployed fathers, fathers with low literacy/educational skills, ex-offenders.

Purpose of Program: The dual goals of the proposed program are to:
(1) assist fathers who need to secure the GED and job skills, to enable them to secure gainful employment;
(2) provide parenting skills classes in order to contribute to the financial, emotional and social development of their children, and to provide fathers who are participants in ARCH youth programs or community fathers with high quality Parenting Skills Education
(3) provide intensive case management, and facilitate support services to include: substance abuse prevention/education
(4) assist program completers to transition to employment at livable wages and to assist those who desire to enter into apprenticeship programs

Services Provided to Program Participants:

GED Preparatory Course with Construction Skills Training Program for Fathers: ARCH provides a customized GED Preparatory Course and an integrated, occupation-based, academic program, which anticipates and meets the needs of fathers in order to assist them in the advancement of the fundamental skills necessary to contribute to the financial, emotional and social development of their children; as well as, the removal of economic, educational and employment barriers which negatively impact a father’s involvement and support of his family.
